Mathematical Methodology & Institution-Specific Grading Regulations

Standard UK 1:2 Weighting: Most traditional UK universities (including Russell Group institutions) calculate your Honours degree based on 240 credits taken across your penultimate and final years (Level 5 and Level 6). Level 4 (Year 1) is qualifying and rarely counts toward your degree classification. Under the 1:2 model, your Level 5 average is weighted at 33.33% and your Level 6 average at 66.67%.

The Open University (OU) Model: OU does not use simple percentage averages. Instead, OU calculates a Weighted Grade Score using 120 credits at Level 2 and 120 credits at Level 3. Level 3 module grades are double-weighted (weighted multiplier of 2). Module percentages are mapped into OU Grade Ranks: Distinction (85%+ = Grade 1), Pass 2 (70-84% = Grade 2), Pass 3 (55-69% = Grade 3), Pass 4 (40-54% = Grade 4). A student secures a First if their total weighted grade score is ≤ 630 AND they possess at least 60 credits of Distinction at Level 3.

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) Exit Velocity: MMU operates a dual-calculation safety net to protect students. The award is based on the better of: Method A (25% Level 5 + 75% Level 6) or Method B (100% Level 6). This tool evaluates both pathways dynamically and selects the optimal classification for the student.

University of St Andrews 20-Point Common Reporting Scale: St Andrews converts module marks onto a 20-point scale where 16.5–20.0 = First Class, 13.5–16.4 = 2:1, 10.5–13.4 = 2:2, and 7.0–10.4 = 3rd. Our engine performs exact linear conversion for students entering traditional percentages.
