Hreflang Tags Generator & Validator
Generate clean, bidirectional hreflang annotations compliant with Google Search Central guidelines. Supports ISO 639-1 languages, ISO 3166-1 regions, x-default fallbacks, and XML sitemaps.
Language & Regional URL Mappings
Enter the alternate URLs for each language or localized market. Google requires all alternates to link bidirectionally to each other.
- Self-referencing tag is automatically generated.
- Bidirectional links are mirrored for complete validation.
- Language code in lower case (ISO 639-1), Region in uppercase (ISO 3166-1).
Generating Hreflang Tags That Actually Validate
Hreflang breaks quietly. A missing return link, a region code sitting where a language code belongs, or one page appearing twice under different locales, and Google ignores the whole cluster. This generator builds the full bidirectional set and flags the combinations that will not validate.
Add each language or regional version of the page above. The generator outputs the complete set of tags for every URL in the cluster, including the self-reference and the x-default, ready to paste into the head of each page.
🛠️ Practitioner Pro Tip: The Bidirectional Return Link Rule
Every hreflang implementation must be fully bidirectional. If your English page (/en/) points to your German alternate (/de/) with hreflang='de', the German page MUST contain a return link pointing back to /en/ with hreflang='en'. If the return link is missing, Google completely invalidates the hreflang cluster to prevent rogue cross-site annotations.
How Hreflang Clusters Work
Hreflang has to be reciprocal. If page A declares page B as its Spanish version, page B must declare page A in return, and every page in the cluster must also point at itself. Language codes follow ISO 639-1 and optional region codes follow ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 — en-GB is valid, en-UK is not.
The generator produces the full matrix rather than a single tag, checks each code pair against the ISO lists, adds an x-default for your fallback page, and warns when the same URL appears under two different locales.

Hreflang Questions
What is the x-default hreflang tag used for?
The x-default tag tells Google which page to serve to users whose language or location does not match any explicitly declared language versions (e.g. an international country selector landing page).
Should hreflang tags be self-referencing?
Yes. Every page within an international cluster must include a self-referencing hreflang tag pointing to its own canonical URL.
Where can hreflang tags be implemented?
Hreflang can be implemented via HTML
link elements, HTTP response headers (ideal for PDFs), or an XML sitemap.📚 Official Companion Guides & Industry Blueprints
